No evidence of isotopic fractionation in olive trees (<i>Olea europaea</i>): a stable isotope tracing experiment

چکیده
Plant transpiration is the dominant water flux in global terrestrial balance and a key process hydrological sciences. Stable isotopes have contributed greatly to this understanding but one difficult assumption for plant source quantification using hydrogen oxygen that no isotopic fractionation occurs during uptake transport within plant. Here we present simple glasshouse experiment with two potted olive trees test fractionation. We irrigated labelled cryogenically extracted from twigs, cores roots. found significant differences composition of wood twigs distinct parts as they reflected signature water. However, were obtained between deep soil Our results suggest trees, under specific experimental conditions, validating traditional isotope-tracing approach.

RATIONALE Stable isotope analysis in ecological studies is usually conducted on biomaterials, e.g. muscle and blood, that require catching the animals. Feces are rarely used for stable isotope analysis, despite the possibility of non-invasive sampling and short-term responsiveness to dietary changes. This promising method is neglected due to a lack of calibration experiments and unknown diet-fe...
متن کاملStable Carbon Isotope Fractionation by Methanogens
Introduction: Methanogenic archaea, which consume CO2 and H2, have been considered models for possible life forms on Mars for a long time, even before the discovery of methane in the Martian atmosphere (1-8). Several intensive experimental studies have been conducted to investigate survivability of methanogens under conditions that approach those found on Mars (2, 3, 9). Various potential sourc...

The performance of a gas chromatography-combustion-isotope ratio mass spectrometry system (GC-C-IRMS) with respect to the dependence of delta(13)C values on the amount of sample is presented. Particular attention is paid to the localization of the amount-dependent isotopic fractionation within the system. Injection experiments with varying amounts of gases (CO(2), n-hexane, and toluene) reveale...
متن کاملStable Isotopic Tracing—A Way Forward for Nanotechnology
Numerous publications and reports have expressed health and safety concerns about the production and use of nanoparticles, especially in areas of exposure monitoring, personal use, and environmental fate and transport. We suggest that stable isotopic tracers, which have been used widely in the earth sciences and in metabolic and other health-related studies for several decades, could be used to...
